We have all heard the quote “Summer bodies are made in winter and healthy bodies are made through consistency.”
Most of us are struggling with winter motivation so how do we stay focused and motivated when all we want to do is bury ourselves under a pile of blankets and hibernate for the winter? Staying motivated throughout the winter months definitely takes that little bit of extra effort.
The winter months mean less sunlight, colder temperatures and often, dampened moods. It is common to feel more tired and less motivated in the winter, which can negatively impact work and life performance.
You know you should get yourself to the gym no matter what the weather is like outside, but instead of crawling out from under your warm blankets and going, you tell yourself next week will be different and you have months until summer… but before you know it, summer is around the corner and you haven’t stepped foot in the gym for months.
Exercising on cold days actually helps boost your body’s ‘feel good’ endorphins which help keep those winter blues away. Exercising has also been found to boost your body’s serotonin, norepinephrine and stress response to help induce a natural state of calm.
Be careful not to let your health and wellness fall by the wayside just because you aren’t wearing shorts and a singlet right now. In fact, winter is the best time to prepare yourself for those long, hot summer days spent in minimal clothing.
So what are the best ways to encourage yourself to exercise when all you want to do is curl up under the covers?
💡 Booking into group gym sessions makes it a lot easier to keep going when there is a gym coach/trainer motivating you. Also when you pay for a session you are less likely to skip out, especially if there is a “no show” fee.
💡Find yourself a gym buddy to go to the gym with and encourages you to go. You can take sessions together and set goals together, which can even make it fun.
💡Plan a holiday. It’s hard to keep yourself motivated if you have nothing to look forward to, which is why planning a trip can help get the ball rolling.
💡If you are one of those people who stays close to the couch after you get home from work, you’re not alone. To fight the urge to stay inside, pack a gym bag and take it to work. You are already out for the day, so you really have no excuse to skip the gym.
💡Buy new gym clothes.
Look good, feel good! try buying some new work-out clothes. Everyone loves shopping, and exercising will give you a great excuse to buy and wear new items.
All of these things can help you to focus on your health and fitness goal and help you keep up your summer motivation in the colder, darker months. 🥶 🥶🥶
Remember: You’re doing this for you, so you’re only cheating yourself.
